January: Wake Early

My goal for January is to wake early. This is something I struggle with and have struggled with for a long time. Waking early is something I want to use to enrich my life and gain more energy for the day.

Right now I wake up around between 7:15 and 7:45 on weekdays and between 8:00 and 9:30 on weekends. I want to change this so I can wake up around 6:00 or 6:15. Eventually I would like to get up around 5:30 or 5:45 to do my writing, meditation and exercise, but my work and school schedules put me in bed later so I would lose needed sleep.

The challenge will be making sure that I can pry myself out of bed. This is the biggest challenges for me. I lack the motivation, willpower or energy to get out of bed on time.

This month I will have a morning ritual: wake up at 6:00 every morning, go to the bathroom, turn the lights on, do some basic exercises, drink some orange juice or water, and write for 30 minutes. I will tweak this basic routine throughout the month and the rest of the year as I find what works and what doesn’t. If I have things I tell myself I have to do it will make it easier to get out of bed.

Emergency Procedures

In case I sleep in or can’t motivate myself to get out of bed, I’ll use these in emergencies:
– Set alarm on phone for 6:01
– Set an “appointment” that I can’t miss early in the morning (an appointment with myself, for breakfast, to write something or do some work – just some commitment to get me out of bed)
– Have a light source ready to wake me up and stop sleepiness
– Have to post failures on Twitter and Facebook
