Hello dear readers (if any of you are still out there)! It’s been almost a year since I last wrote in this space. It’s been a while. How are you? How’s the journey? I’m writing now to let you know that change is coming. I’ve changed. You’ve changed. The world has changed (don’t worry, no politics here, I promise). Changes are coming to Quiet Habits.
During my time off (during which Sarah and I finished a basement remodel, had a baby, and I started a graduated and started a new job), I’ve done a lot of thinking. The past year has been quite the journey of ups and downs. I’ve forgotten a lot and learned a lot. I’ve moved on from things I used to enjoy doing. At the end of the day, I’ve failed a lot and learned a lot. I let this blog sit quietly, waiting for my return when I felt ready. Today I feel ready. I’m finally facing the blank page (text box?) in front of me and writing the things that have been on my mind for some time.
So, on to the changes:
I’m committing to write more often. I don’t want to have a set schedule right now because I know me and I know that won’t last more than a couple of weeks. But I am committing to publish at least a few times each month. That might change in the future, but for now I think I can handle that.
I’m changing some of the themes of this blog. By and large, this blog started as kind of a “how-to” for minimalism and simple living. And while I still think many of my older posts are relevant and great to read, that’s not the direction I want to take anymore. Yes, I still think simple living is a fantastic way to live and I believe that minimalism, among other things, is a great tool to realize a simpler life. But for too long I pretended to have simple answers to some of life’s tough questions in the form of simple blog posts. I know that’s not the case now, so I’m formatting this blog as more of a “Nathan’s thoughts, questions, musings, and more as he figures out this journey of life”. I’ll write about habits, minimalism, simple living, and other such things. But I’ll also write about struggles I’m facing, things I notice in the world that trouble me or that are awesome, introversion, being a dad, anxiety and depression, and how to appreciate the tiny wins every day. I think many future posts will be written in a kind of memoir style but in a way that is still applicable to others and provides some sort of takeaway (I promise I won’t be publishing journal entries or writing an autobiography on this blog).
I’m changing my writing style. For much of this blog’s history, I wrote in a how-to style, often providing lists or solutions to certain problems. I may do that from time to time, because as human’s I think we crave solutions in the form of simple tasks, habits, experiments, lists, or other similar forms. But I also think we need deep, insightful writing that just makes us think. I will for sure still write posts that wrap things up nicely with an easy “here’s a possible solution” style. But I also want to write a lot more posts that leave you in thought, wondering about your own life, or having a deeper understanding of a certain topic or point of view. I’m not going to pretend to be the best writer or the deepest thinker or the authority on anything. But I do want to provide my unique experiences and thoughts on specific subjects. So far, I think these will include: simple living, anxiety and depression, fatherhood, writing, introversion, mindfulness, and other related topics. If you’re interested in any of these, please consider subscribing to get my blog posts via email. If these don’t interest you, I totally understand. I don’t want to add any unneeded clutter to your life.
I’m changing the blog’s highlight color. For the longest time I’ve used a blue color with a slight hint of gray for the Quiet Habits logo, links, and other colored items on this website. I found it by accident while using an online color picker and have used it for the past 4 years. It’s been a subtle, but big part of this blog. In the next few days I’m going to switch from blue to green. My only reason for this is to provide a fresh start and fresh look for the blog, and green is my favorite color, and it felt like the right time for a change. You may also notice some fonts changing on the blog. Feel free to leave any feedback in the comments. I like feedback and comments.
I’m thinking about starting a short podcast. I know, I know, everyone is starting a podcast. I think it’ll be a fun side project to try a different topic and medium. It’ll probably be about fatherhood, being a father and an introvert, and having anxiety as a father, and probably a bunch of other stuff, too. It’s very much a “it’s still swirling around my head” project. I figured if I posted here, I might get some good feedback or feel more compelled to get started. Links will be posted if/when I get started.
Quiet Habits will change a lot but will also largely remain the same. I hope you’re willing to follow me on this new journey. Thank you for your continued support and readership!
