May: Morning Exercise and Evening Stretching

In May I will exercise every morning (I’ll post my schedule tomorrow) and stretch at night before bed. We all know that exercise benefits us but it is still probably one of the most talked about but least accomplished habits ever. I want to change that in my life and help inspire others to do the same. But first, an update on how April went:

April was amazing! I drank only water for the entire month with just one exception when my wife and I went out to eat. I felt great! My skin is not as dry and feels better, I feel less tired, I experience fewer headaches and I just feel better all around. I used to have a glass of orange or apple juice every morning, drink soda occasionally, have some Kool-Aid with dinner and lemonade at restaurants. After this month I’m going to ditch most of that in favor of water and I suggest you try it out too.

For more about the benefits I found from drinking water, see this post.

Now on to May.

I am not overweight and I’m not entirely out of shape, but I am definitely not in shape. I get winded after a 10 minute bike ride and I can barely muster 10 push ups. When I do the 7 minute workout I am totally beat by the end. I usually don’t get as many reps in as I want to. I want to change this.

This month I will exercise every morning and stretch at night before bed. Exercise in the morning will help get the blood pumping, wake me up and get me ready for the day. Stretching at night will help me wind down, get ready for bed and smooth out all the wrinkles in my body from the work day.

My exercise routine will consist of a mixture of yoga, basic weight lifting, bike riding, jogging/running (maybe), and the 7 minute workout. I’m going to do a combination of these throughout the week for variety and to work different parts of my body in different ways. I will create a schedule and post it tomorrow. I wanted to have a schedule made up already, but I had finals week this last week and it didn’t happen.

Stretching will be basic. Before bed I will do about 10-15 minutes of stretching based on how my body feels. If my back is sore I will focus on my back. If my legs need some help, I’ll stretch my legs. I’m also going to try to get a brief meditation in before or after stretching, but it’s not mandatory this month.

I will take body measurements tomorrow as well, although weight and muscle size are not as important as how I feel. I am also going to record what exercises I do in a journal and how I feel after each session and the next day. This is so I can tailor my routine for the future and find out what works and what doesn’t and what I like and what I don’t like.

Join me this month with the exercise habit. It’ll only take 10 minutes of your time each day but will make a huge difference in how you feel and how your day goes.
